View original image[Asia Economy Reporter So-yeon Park] Kim Hyun-seok, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics (Head of CE Division), announced plans to build an apartment Internet of Things (IoT) system and launch AI robots.
On the 7th (local time), Kim held a press conference in Las Vegas, USA, stating, "Samsung has started a business connecting newly built apartments with a home IoT system," adding, "Although it is at the initial stage, we have secured orders for about 20,000 units based on domestic standards."
The apartment IoT system construction business is a business-to-business (B2B) project that connects not only home appliances but also elevators, parking lots, and energy management systems throughout the building. By linking the apartment management system with Samsung Electronics' IoT management system, 'SmartThings,' it is possible to control appliances and objects within the building.
Kim said, "Globally, most newly constructed buildings are adopting home IoT systems, and since this is a B2B business targeting construction companies, the scale is large once an order is secured," adding, "Recently, in the UK, an order worth 30 million dollars was placed at once." He also added, "In Korea, we are carrying out a project to build our IoT system in about 2,400 units of Banpo Raemian Prestige."
Having unveiled the companion robot 'Bolly' the day before, Kim also mentioned plans to launch robots in the first half of this year. It is known that Samsung is preparing to release another commercial robot different from Bolly and the driving assistance robot 'GEMS.' This product aligns with Samsung Electronics' new home appliance business direction, 'Project Prism.'
Kim said, "We planned to launch robots last year, but it was postponed because it was difficult to meet a reasonable price that consumers want," adding, "I believe consumers will purchase if the price is similar to that of large dryers or washing machines."
