The Most Ordered Food on New Year's Day is 'Chicken'
Baedal Minjok, Year-End and New Year Order Analysis
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] The most ordered food on New Year's Day was chicken. Woowa Brothers (CEO Kim Beom-jun), the operator of 'Baedal Minjok,' announced on the 8th that chicken accounted for 20% of all orders on January 1st, based on an analysis of year-end and New Year order data. Since Baedal Minjok began daily order aggregation, chicken has held the top spot as the most ordered item on New Year's Day for five consecutive years since 2016.
The second place was taken by Korean food. The proportion of Korean food orders on the first day of this year was 15%, surpassing Chinese food (10%), bunsik (Korean snack foods) (9%), and fast food (8%). Until 2016 and 2017, Korean food orders ranked fourth, but it has been on the rise, reaching second place in 2018. Baedal Minjok explained, "We believe the increase in Korean food orders is due to more households resolving meals through delivery orders."
The overall volume of delivery orders during the year-end and New Year period also increased. The number of orders on New Year's Day was about 1.7 million, a 47% increase from 1.16 million on January 1st last year. On that day, the Baedal Minjok app recorded 3.2 million visitors.
The day with the highest number of orders last year was December 1st (about 1.9 million), surpassing Christmas (about 1.83 million). Baedal Minjok explained that orders tend to increase by about 40% on holidays compared to weekdays and by about 20% on rainy days compared to clear days. December 1st last year was a rainy holiday nationwide, which is analyzed as the reason for the surge in orders. December 31st, the last day of 2019, recorded the highest number of orders (about 1.82 million) on a weekday basis.
