SKC Showcases Future Mobility Materials at CES 2020
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] SKC showcased high value-added and high-performance mobility materials at 'CES 2020,' held from January 7 to 10 in Las Vegas, USA. SKC, which has positioned mobility alongside semiconductors, eco-friendly materials, and displays as key growth pillars, plans to strengthen its status as a mobility materials company at CES 2020.
SKC participated in CES 2020 under the theme 'SK Creates the Future' together with major SK Group affiliates (SK Telecom, SK Innovation, SK Hynix). This marks their second participation following last year. They introduced battery anode copper foil, a core material for future mobility batteries; lightweight PCT film; transparent PI film for future display materials; and eco-friendly polyurethane for automotive interiors.
Copper foil used as an anode material in secondary batteries is a key mobility material that leads to higher battery capacity and weight reduction. The thinner the foil, the more anode active material can be loaded into the battery, making thin-film technology critically important. KCFT, a wholly owned subsidiary of SKC launched on January 7, boasts world-class technology producing the world's thinnest 4μm copper foil.
PCT film, a lightweight material for vehicles, is a product commercialized first in the world by SKC. It is resistant to heat, moisture, and alkali, and has excellent insulation properties, making it suitable for automotive, special industrial, and 5G cable materials. In particular, replacing thick copper wire cables and rigid battery busbars with FFCs (Flat Flexible Cables) made from PCT film can reduce copper usage by about half, enabling vehicle weight reduction.
Transparent polyimide (PI) film can be used in various displays inside future vehicles. Due to its glass-like hard surface that is unbreakable yet flexible, transparent PI film is gaining attention as a next-generation display material for foldable and rollable displays, as well as for future automotive interior displays. SKC completed the establishment of an integrated production system for transparent PI film in 2019 and will begin full-scale commercialization in 2020.
SKC also showcased eco-friendly polyurethane Nextiol for automotive interiors from its joint venture MCNS (Mitsui Chemicals & SKC Polyurethanes Inc.). Nextiol emits fewer volatile organic compounds compared to existing products. Additionally, polyurethane products effective in reducing noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) were introduced.
