Director Bong Joon-ho's film Parasite became the first Korean movie to win the Best Motion Picture ? Foreign Language award at the Golden Globes in the United States. On the 5th (local time), at the 77th Golden Globe Awards held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, USA, the film won the Foreign Language Film award, beating out Portrait of a Lady on Fire (France), The Farewell (Chinese-American), Les Mis?rables (France), and Pain and Glory (Spain).
Receiving the trophy, Director Bong Joon-ho expressed his joy, saying, "This is amazing. I can't believe it." He added, "If you overcome the subtitle barrier of about one inch, you can enjoy many more films," which was met with thunderous applause. He emphasized, "It is already an honor to be nominated alongside filmmakers from around the world, including Pedro Almod?var," and stated, "We think we speak only one language. That language is cinema."
The Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), is considered one of the two major film awards in the United States alongside the Academy Awards (Oscars). The results often influence the Oscars held the following month, making it known as a precursor to the Oscars. This is the first time Korean content has won a Golden Globe award across both film and television categories. It was also the first time Korean works were nominated.
Parasite had long been considered a strong contender for the Best Foreign Language Film award. Since winning the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festival, it has participated in sixty film festivals and award ceremonies and won honors at thirty-eight of them, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor) and the Chicago Film Critics Association (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Foreign Language Film). On the 4th, it also won the highest honor, Best Picture, from the National Society of Film Critics. This achievement has further increased the possibility of winning the Oscar for Best International Feature Film. Parasite is currently a preliminary nominee for the Oscar's International Feature Film and Original Song categories. The final nominees will be announced on the 13th.
At the awards ceremony, Director Bong Joon-ho was joined by Im Kyung-bae, Vice Chairman of CJ Group; actors Song Kang-ho, Lee Jung-eun, and Cho Yeo-jeong; and producer Kwak Sin-ae, CEO of Barunson E&A. Screenwriter Han Jin-won, who was nominated alongside Bong for Best Screenplay, was also present. However, the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards went to Sam Mendes for 1917 and Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, respectively. 1917 also won Best Picture in the Drama category. Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood took home three awards, including Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category and Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt).
Korean-American actress Awkwafina won the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy award for The Farewell. This is the first time a Korean-American actor has won a Best Actress award in the film category at the Golden Globes. She expressed her gratitude, saying, "I thank director Lulu Wang for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." She also thanked "my father, my grandmother who raised me, and my mother who is watching over me from above."
