[CES2020] LG Electronics Unveils 2020 Model LG OLED TV for the First Time
[Las Vegas, USA = Asia Economy Reporter Park So-yeon] LG Electronics is leading the premium TV market by unveiling new OLED TV models that combine innovative design with more powerful performance.
LG Electronics will showcase its 2020 LG OLED TV lineup at CES 2020, the world's largest home appliance and IT exhibition, held from January 7 to 10 (local time) in Las Vegas, USA.
LG Electronics has newly applied the more powerful AI processor ‘Alpha 9 Gen 3 (α9 Gen3)’ to the new products. In addition to the existing OLED TV lineup of 55, 65, 77, and 88 inches, a 48-inch model will be introduced for the first time.
LG Electronics plans to further solidify its technological leadership in the global premium TV market by leading with the 2020 OLED TV models that upgrade OLED’s differentiated strengths such as picture quality and design.
TV Design ‘Innovation and Evolution’
LG Electronics presents the ‘Wall-Mounted Design’ that evolves TV design to the next level. This design completely adheres the entire TV, including the screen, driving parts, and speakers, to the wall. It offers a level of luxury far beyond conventional wall-mounted TVs.
To realize the wall-mounted design, LG Electronics newly designed the internal and rear parts of the TV. The bracket, which is the part attached to the wall, is built into the main body so that the wall-mounting section is not visible from the outside. This design allows the entire TV to be fully attached to the wall, enhancing viewing immersion and space utilization. Previously, when installing a TV on the wall, a gap equal to the thickness of the bracket would form between the wall and the TV.
LG Electronics plans to apply the wall-mounted design to the 2020 LG OLED TV models (model names: ZX/GX) and the 8K Super Ultra HD TV (model name: Nano99).
LG TV design innovation is possible because OLED does not require a backlight. LG OLED TVs have evolved in design through methods such as the ‘Picture on Glass’ method, which applies transparent tempered glass behind the panel (LG SIGNATURE OLED TV), the ‘Wallpaper’ method that makes the TV look like a picture hanging on the wall (LG SIGNATURE OLED W), and the world’s first ‘Rollable’ method that rolls and unrolls the screen (LG SIGNATURE OLED R).
Overwhelming Picture Quality and Viewing Environment Optimized for Content
LG OLED TVs support optimized viewing environments depending on the type of content users watch, such as movies, games, and sports.
Features such as ‘Dolby Vision IQ,’ which provides the optimal screen according to ambient brightness and genre, and the latest HDR (High Definition Range) standards like UHD Alliance’s ‘Filmmaker Mode,’ which preserves the director’s intended colors and atmosphere, especially offer vivid customer experiences when watching movies.
Additionally, the TVs come equipped with various applications such as ‘Disney+,’ ‘Apple TV+,’ and ‘Netflix,’ allowing users to conveniently enjoy diverse content.
In particular, LG Electronics has significantly enhanced features for gamers. The new models are the industry’s first to simultaneously support Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible’ and AMD’s ‘Radeon FreeSync.’
These features synchronize the refresh rate of the graphics card in the external device running the game with the TV screen, providing users with an optimal gaming environment. They prevent screen tearing and misalignment that occur when the refresh rates of the graphics card and screen differ.
Moreover, LG OLED TVs include features such as ‘Sports Alert,’ which conveniently notifies users of their favorite team’s game schedules and results when watching sports, and ‘Bluetooth Surround,’ which uses both the built-in speaker and external Bluetooth speakers simultaneously to create immersive sound, providing a stadium-like experience.
LG OLED TVs do not require a backlight, so each pixel emits its own light and can be freely controlled to express picture quality delicately. They are regarded by many experts as the best TVs for enjoying various content such as movies, games, and sports due to their overwhelming contrast ratio, black expression, and nearly perfect viewing angles.
Continuing to Lead the Rapidly Growing Global OLED TV Camp
Since commercializing the world’s first large OLED TV in 2013, LG Electronics has continuously led the global OLED TV camp. The number of global TV manufacturers joining the OLED TV market, which LG Electronics was the sole manufacturer of, has increased to 15 as of the end of last year. As premium demand for OLED TVs continues to grow, the OLED TV camp is expected to keep expanding this year.
