SKT Introduces 5G-Based Media and Mobility Technologies at CES
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] SK Telecom will showcase various 5G-based media and mobility technologies at CES 2020, the world's largest IT and electronics exhibition, held from the 7th to the 10th (local time) at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the United States.
On the 6th, SK Telecom announced that it will operate a joint exhibition booth of 715㎡ (approximately 216 pyeong) with SK Innovation, SK Hynix, and SKC under the theme "Agents of Evolution Toward the Future" at this year's CES 2020.
◆ Exhibition of Latest Media Technologies= At the exhibition booth, various media technologies based on 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) technology will be showcased, including ▲5G-8K TV ▲Calla (Call+AR) for Vertical TV ▲5GX Multiview ▲Jump Augmented Reality (AR) Aqua World ▲Watch and Play ▲and the US digital TV broadcasting standard (ATSC 3.0).
Viewers of 5G-8K TV can freely enjoy next-generation media services such as multiview broadcasting, AR, and virtual reality (VR) content not only on smartphones but also on TVs through SK Telecom's 5G network.
Calla for Vertical TV is a service that applies SK Telecom's T phone video call service 'Calla' to Samsung's 'Vertical TV.' It is equipped with SK Telecom's ▲face recognition-based AR technology ▲real-time person and background separation technology ▲and UHD-level ultra-high-definition technology.
5GX Multiview is a service that allows simultaneous viewing of up to 12 multi-channel videos on one screen. Users can watch personalized screens of esports players and broadcast screens simultaneously on their smartphones, and when watching performance videos, they can select and view only the desired performer.
Jump AR Aqua World is a service that allows multiple users to simultaneously interact with various characters underwater and enjoy AR content by utilizing SK Telecom's interactive cinematic AR rendering technology (a technology that synthesizes the user's real space and virtual environment so that the user can interact with the virtual space).
Watch and Play allows internet game users to enjoy both spectator and play modes, and game participation is possible even while watching broadcasts. The ATSC 3.0 multiview service will be showcased in collaboration with Sinclair Broadcasting in the United States.
◆ Introduction of Next-Generation Mobility Technologies= At the exhibition booth, SK Telecom will also introduce various autonomous driving technologies and services such as ▲Integrated IVI ▲Roadrunner equipped with HD map update technology ▲next-generation single-photon LiDAR.
'Integrated IVI' is SK Telecom's integrated in-vehicle entertainment system developed to allow users to easily access various content inside the vehicle. Services such as 'T map,' artificial intelligence 'NUGU,' music service 'Flo,' and over-the-top (OTT) video service 'Wavve' are integrated.
'Roadrunner,' equipped with HD map update technology, is a technology that detects traffic information such as lanes, traffic lights, and traffic conditions during vehicle operation and updates the existing HD map in real time.
The 'next-generation single-photon LiDAR' is a prototype combining ▲a wavelength laser module capable of detecting long distances up to 500m ▲quantum sensing technologies such as single-photon receivers ▲and micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) mirror scanning technology. The combination of these core technologies is expected to play a crucial sensor role necessary for autonomous driving by clearly distinguishing objects even in severe weather conditions or at distances up to 500m.
