[김맹녕의 골프영어회화] "샷 건(shot gun)이 뭐예요?"

대규모 아마추어골프대회는 시간 절약을 위해 샷 건 방식으로 플레이를 한다.

골프에서 샷 건은 어떻게 진행하고, 또 그 의미는 무엇일까?(What is a shot gun start in golf, and what does it mean?)

연말에는 보통 친목회나 동창회, 자선골프대회가 많다. 샷 건은 140명이 넘을 때 시간 절약을 위해 선택한다(a shot gun format start is a great way to condense the time it takes to play a tournament). 산탄총을 쏘듯이 동시에 스타트를 한다는 게 유래다(It is named for the idea of firing a shot gun in the air as the indication all players should start their round at the same time).

샷 건 방식은 운영위원회가 지정하는 18개 홀 티잉 에어리어에 플레이어가 미리 대기하고 있다가 산탄총 소리와 함께 동시에 출발한다(A Shot gun start is a golf tournament format in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from specified holes). 물론 총소리에 놀라는 사람과 동물이 생기면서 총을 쏘는 것은 중지됐다(Actually, gun shots are not used any more).

한동안 사이렌이나 호루라기를 불어 신호하다가 지금은 티 오프 시간을 정해 스타트를 한다(everyone is told to begin play at the same time on the clock). 골퍼를 18개 홀에 4명씩 배치하면 72명, 8명이면 144명이 동시에 티 오프하고, 홀아웃(everyone starts and finishes at the same time)해 많은 인원을 수용하는 장점이 있다. 골프장 측에서 당연히 주중에만 허용한다.

A: What time does the tournament begin?(대회가 몇시에 시작하나요?)

B:The shotgun strat will begin at 12:30(샷 건으로 12시30분에 출발합니다).

A: What are today's rules? (오늘의 플레이 룰은 무엇입니까?)

B: This competition holds summer rules so you must play the shot as it is(이 골프대회는 노터치 룰이 적용되므로 공이 놓여 있는 상태로 쳐야 합니다).

A: I know. Playing the ball as it lies is the fundamental rule of golf(잘 알았습니다. 공이 놓여 있는 상태로 플레이 하는 것은 골프의 기본이지요).
