Hadong County in South Gyeongsang Province is strengthening the coverage of its "2026 Residents' Safety Insurance" to minimize damage to residents caused by various disasters and accidents.
The Residents' Safety Insurance is a system designed to reduce the financial burden on residents and their families in the event of unexpected disasters or accidents. Hadong County has been operating this program for seven consecutive years since its initial introduction in 2020.
This year, in particular, the county expanded coverage further by receiving 18 million won in provincial funding from South Gyeongsang Province.
The insurance covers a total of 26 categories, including death caused by natural disasters, explosion·fire·collapse accidents, injuries while using public transportation, drowning accidents, agricultural machinery accidents, and deaths caused by social disasters. Depending on the type of accident and the extent of damage, the maximum insurance payout is up to 30 million won.
This year, the county has raised the death benefits for natural disasters and social disasters from 10 million won to 20 million won. In addition, the accidental death benefit for agricultural machinery accidents has been increased to 25 million won, injury compensation for persons of merit to 30 million won, and death benefits for wild animal attacks to 10 million won, respectively.
In response to climate crises such as heat waves and cold spells, new coverage has also been added. A newly established diagnosis benefit for heat-related and cold-related illnesses provides 100,000 won each, and a diagnosis benefit of 100,000 won is also granted for dog bites and collisions with dogs.
In addition, the insurance now includes sinkhole accidents within the scope of explosion·fire·collapse accident coverage, and has expanded coverage for injuries involving personal mobility devices to also include shared mobility accidents, thereby addressing blind spots in safety.
All residents who are registered in Hadong County at the time of an accident are automatically enrolled in the Residents' Safety Insurance with no separate sign-up required. Registered foreign nationals and overseas Koreans with domestic residence status are also included, and duplicate coverage is possible regardless of any other personal insurance policies.
Insurance claims can be filed within three years from the date of the accident. The victim or a legal heir must submit the required documents to the Korea Local Finance Association.
A Hadong County official stated, "The Residents' Safety Insurance serves as a strong safety net that protects the lives of our residents," adding, "We will continue to actively promote and support the program to ensure that residents facing unexpected accidents and disasters can receive substantial assistance."
