Controversy is growing after it was revealed that a Chinese national, who was arrested in Thailand on suspicion of large-scale arms trafficking, was wearing a hat emblazoned with the word "Korea" and the Taegeukgi (South Korean flag) at the time of his arrest.
According to Pattaya Mail and other local Thai media on May 10 (local time), a man in his 30s of Chinese nationality was recently apprehended in Pattaya, Thailand, on charges of illegally possessing firearms and explosives. A police search of his residence reportedly uncovered a large cache of military-grade equipment, including assault rifles, ammunition, C-4 explosives, and detonators.

Local police, finding this suspicious, tracked the suspect's identity and searched his residence, which revealed evidence of large-scale weapons storage. The hat the suspect was wearing at the time of arrest further fueled the controversy. In released photos, the man is seen being escorted by police while wearing a hat featuring the word "Korea" and the Taegeukgi.
On domestic social media, reactions poured in such as "Just by looking at the photo, Koreans could be misunderstood as the culprit," "Was this intentionally made to look like a Korean?" and "A hat that even Koreans rarely wear." Some netizens also suspected intentionality, saying, "Was this an attempt to commit a terrorist act pretending to be Korean?"
Local police do not view this as a simple illegal arms possession case. With reports that some of the weapons found at the suspect's residence were identified as firearms used by Thai police officers, the investigation has expanded to include the possible involvement of Thai military and police personnel. Thai authorities are currently investigating related individuals, including naval officers, and it has been reported that additional suspects have been arrested on charges of supplying the weapons. The suspect reportedly told police during questioning that he had collected the weapons with the intention of taking his own life. However, local authorities are focusing their investigation on the possible background and purpose, given the scale and type of the weapons, as well as the fact that the suspect possessed multiple identification documents.

Local police are reportedly investigating the possibility that these IDs were illegally obtained.
Thai authorities are not ruling out the possibility that this case could expand into terrorism plots, international scam crimes, or connections with Cambodia. The leadership of the Thai police has stated that they will thoroughly investigate whether military or police personnel were involved in the weapons leak. The Chinese side has also announced its cooperation with the investigation. The Chinese Embassy in Thailand stated, "The Chinese government takes this matter very seriously" and reportedly added, "If criminal activity is confirmed, we will not protect our nationals."
