Established in 1895, the Venice Biennale is regarded as one of the world's largest international art events. This year's edition features 99 national pavilions and a main exhibition with 111 artists selected by the chief curator, Coyo Kao.
The Korean Pavilion, under the theme of "Haebang Space," sheds light on the political and social changes in Korean society from the liberation in 1945 to the present day. The exhibition is overseen by Artistic Director Choi Bitna, with artists Noh Hyeri and Choi Goeun participating. In addition, Han Kang, Kim Hoojoo, Lee Rang, Hwang Yeji, and Christian Nyampeta are joining as fellows.
This year marks the first time that the Doosan Yonkang Foundation is supporting the Korean Pavilion as part of its visual arts support program. The exhibition is especially meaningful as artist Noh Hyeri, a participant in the foundation’s "Doosan Art Lab" program for emerging artists, and Artistic Director Choi Bitna, currently a supervisor of the "Doosan Curator Workshop," are both involved in this project.
Artist Noh Hyeri gained exhibition experience at Doosan Gallery through Doosan Art Lab in 2017 and held a solo exhibition titled "August is the Cruelest" at the same venue last year. For this exhibition, she is presenting a new work titled "Bearing."
Artistic Director Choi Bitna previously served as a curator for the 2016 Gwangju Biennale and as co-artistic director of the 2022 Singapore Biennale, and is currently active as a supervisor for the Doosan Curator Workshop.
A Doosan Yonkang Foundation representative stated, "It is meaningful to see artists with whom we have grown together now featured at the Venice Biennale," adding, "We will continue to support artists as they explore new artistic worlds."
