"Parasite Mentality" and "Makes Me Not Want Kids" — Wave of Criticism

As the KOSPI continues its record-breaking rally fueled by the artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor boom, posts certifying investment profits from semiconductor stocks such as SK hynix are flooding social media. Amid this trend, a government employee who discovered that their parents had made significant profits from stock investments made a controversial statement: "If my parents buy me a house when I get married, I will be a devoted child for life," sparking strong criticism.

On May 13, a post titled "My parents made 700 million won from SK hynix—surely they'll buy me a house?" spread across social networking services (SNS). The author, identified as a government employee referred to as Mr. A, wrote, "I am not married yet, and this is all I’m hoping for at the moment. However, I don’t think I could actually say it out loud." He added, "Wouldn’t they buy me an apartment in the provinces when I get married?" expressing his expectations.

He continued, "I wish they would just sell the stocks, but I’m staying silent because I’m afraid they’ll find out I’m hoping for it." He further revealed his thoughts, saying, "If they could just buy me a home worth around 200 to 300 million won, I would be a devoted child for life. Please."

Backlash Over "Parasite Mindset"

Many people criticized Mr. A’s post. One commenter wrote, "Your parents gave birth to you with five healthy fingers and raised you well so far. Isn’t that enough to be grateful for? Now that you’re an adult, is it normal to be this immature and just ask for things? If I were next to you, I’d want to smack you to bring you to your senses."

Another commenter pointed out, "This is why you can’t talk about your earnings even with family. As a child, shouldn’t you worry about your parents’ retirement funds first? Posts like this make me not want to have kids." Other criticisms included, "Have you even thought about the gift tax?", "Your mindset is wrong. Earn your own living," and "This is the very definition of a parasite mindset."

Record-High KOSPI Leads to Surge in Profit Certification Posts

Recently, posts certifying large profits from SK hynix stock have been continuously appearing online. Last month, a post was shared with the content, "Investing in SK hynix over ten years ago has made it possible for me to save up for marriage."

Mr. B, the author, shared, "My mother, who knew nothing about stocks, took me to a securities company to open an account for me, deposited just under 30 million won, and bought SK hynix stocks for me. She told me to use it as part of my marriage fund, but since I’m not married yet, the stocks remain untouched."

Along with this, Mr. B disclosed a screenshot showing his SK hynix stock holdings: 782 shares purchased at 33,554 won each, with the current price at 1,146,000 won as of April 16. His unrealized gains amounted to 869,932,129 won, yielding a staggering return of 3,315%.

Another story that garnered attention involved Mr. C, whose mother’s SK hynix stock investments exceeded a 10,000% return, growing to 600 million won. Mr. C’s mother had purchased 382 shares at an average price of 13,035 won, for a total investment of 4.97 million won. The return was 12,873.11%, with unrealized gains reaching 640 million won.

Meanwhile, SK hynix’s stock price continues to soar, and market outlooks predict that this trend will last for the time being, as memory price hikes and improving earnings are expected to outpace the rate of share price increases. Accordingly, the target price has been raised again to 2.8 million won.
