According to Bloomberg and other media outlets on May 12 (local time), Ukraine's anti-corruption authorities announced that they had uncovered a money laundering ring related to a high-end real estate development project near Kyiv and indicted those involved. Authorities stated that the group is suspected of laundering approximately $10.5 million.

In an official statement, authorities specified that one of the accused is a former presidential chief of staff, but local Ukrainian media reported that this individual is former Chief of Staff Yermak.

Yermak has been responsible for diplomatic affairs since the early days of President Zelensky's administration. After President Zelensky took office in 2019, Yermak oversaw foreign affairs, and in February 2020, he was appointed Chief of Staff to the President. Since then, he has played a significant role in national administration, being regarded as President Zelensky's closest confidant and most influential aide. In November last year, he stepped down after becoming embroiled in corruption allegations.

Ukraine's anti-corruption authorities have clarified that President Zelensky himself is not subject to investigation in this case. However, given that the Zelensky administration has consistently emphasized eradicating corruption even during wartime, the indictment of such a close aide is expected to have unavoidable political ramifications.

Some analysts note that this indictment is unlikely to pose an immediate threat to President Zelensky's position. This is because the country remains in a state of war, and recent public opinion polls show President Zelensky's approval rating is relatively stable. According to a survey released by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology on May 4, President Zelensky's approval rating stands at 58%.
