Growing Local Interest in Korean Culture Evident During Campaign

A record number of five councilors of Korean descent were elected in the UK local elections.

According to the results of the local council elections in England announced on May 10 (local time), Kwon Bora, a member of the ruling Labour Party, was elected for a third term in Hammersmith and Fulham, London. Hammersmith, Kwon's constituency, is traditionally known for its low Korean population, making her third consecutive victory even more significant.

In the London Kingston constituency, home to New Malden—the largest Korean community in Europe—four Korean British candidates from the Liberal Democrats were elected.

Elizabeth Park (Okjin Park) and Robert Kim (Dongseong Kim) secured re-election. Jane Im (Hyejeong Im) and Callum Sol Morrissy (Josol) entered the council for the first time. Of the 48 council seats in Kingston, four (8.3%) are now held by councilors of Korean descent.

The elected candidates unanimously stated that the Korean Wave (Hallyu) had a positive impact on their local campaigns.

Kwon Bora told Yonhap News, "I am grateful to have been given another opportunity." She said that during the campaign, she wore a badge featuring both the Korean and UK flags and noted, "As global interest in Korean culture rises, many people approached me after noticing the badge."

Callum Sol Morrissy also mentioned that Hallyu helped his campaign, sharing a story: "One elderly woman said she was voting for me because she is a BTS fan and was watching BTS's comeback performance."

Meanwhile, Timothy Jo, a North Korean defector, ran for a seat on the Stockport Council in Greater Manchester but was not elected, while the election for candidate Park Jihyun was postponed due to local constituency circumstances.
