Escape Due to Unlocked Enclosure... Two Monkeys Rescued from Pohang Zoo

Another Escape Following Wolf and Deer Incidents

Both Japanese macaques that escaped from a zoo in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, have been safely rescued.

According to Pohang city officials, at around 7:30 p.m. on May 10, two male Japanese macaques out of a total of four escaped from the temporary zoo located inside Hwanho Park in Pohang.

The incident reportedly occurred because the zookeeper failed to properly lock the enclosure door after feeding the monkeys.

A zoo staff member belatedly realized the monkeys had escaped and launched an internal search, but was unsuccessful. The zoo then worked with fire authorities and managed to capture one monkey alive near the cage at around 10:50 p.m. the same day.

The other monkey was rescued from a tree near the zoo at about 6:15 a.m. the next day, on May 11. No human injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

Recently, there have been a series of animal escape cases from zoos and farms. Previously, on April 8, a wolf named Neukgu escaped from Daejeon O-World and was captured alive after 17 days. On April 22, seven deer escaped from a deer farm in Okgil-dong, Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province.
