"King Sejong's Birthday" Event at Gyeongbokgung on the 15th... Hosted by Actor Ryu Seung-ryong

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on May 11 that it will hold a commemorative event for the "629th Birthday of King Sejong" at Heungnyemun Square in Gyeongbokgung Palace, starting at 6:00 p.m. on May 15.


This year’s event, under the theme "Yeominrak, Enjoying Together with the World," is designed as a festival to honor King Sejong’s spirit of caring for the people and his cultural achievements, allowing anyone to participate and enjoy. Actor Ryu Seung-ryong will host the event, which will be attended by around 1,000 citizens.

The event will feature traditional performances such as "Daechwita" and "Yeominrak" by the National Gugak Center, as well as reinterpretations of tradition through modern dance performances like "Jeongdaeyeop Ilmu" and "Polaris and Twenty-Eight."


In addition, the "Sejong Culture Award" will be presented to individuals and organizations who have contributed to the creative development of Korean culture in areas such as the Korean language and Hangeul, culture and the arts, the humanities, public cultural welfare and diversity, and cultural exchange, cooperation, and globalization.


The commemorative event is free and open to everyone. Online pre-registration is available from May 11 to May 13 through the official event Instagram and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s website.


On the afternoon of May 14, the day before King Sejong’s birthday, an event will be held in front of the King Sejong statue where birthday greetings written by citizens will be displayed as floor projections.



Furthermore, starting at 10:00 a.m. on May 15, a variety of exhibitions and hands-on programs will take place at Heungnyemun Square prior to the main event. These include "Hunminjeongeum Prologue Rubbing Experience" (Hangeul Cultural Solidarity), "Making an Angbu Ilgu Sundial" (National Gwacheon Science Museum), multimedia experience "Hangeul Playground" (National Hangeul Museum), "King Sejong and Korean Medicine" (Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine), "Danso (bamboo flute) Crafting Experience" (National Gugak Center), and "Making an Employee Badge from the Sejong Era" (National Institute of Korean Language Culture Association), offering family visitors a chance to create unique memories.
