General Motors Achieves 1.6 Billion Kilometers of Hands-Free Driving with 'Super Cruise'

Real-World Driving Data from 750,000 Vehicles Secured
"Eyes-Off" Driving Technology to Launch in 2028

General Motors (hereinafter referred to as GM) announced on May 8 that its hands-free driver assistance system, Super Cruise, has recorded a cumulative hands-free driving distance of 1 billion miles (1.6 billion kilometers). This distance is equivalent to making 2,100 round trips between the Earth and the Moon.

The company explained that this achievement goes beyond a simple record—it marks a key milestone in GM’s journey to expand from advanced driver assistance systems today toward autonomous driving technologies of the future. The vast amount of data collected from real customer driving environments has also further demonstrated GM's technological competitiveness and safety.

This milestone was achieved through approximately 750,000 vehicles equipped with Super Cruise across 23 models currently released in North America. The large-scale real-world driving data accumulated from these vehicles is being utilized as a core asset to accelerate the advancement of GM’s autonomous driving technology.

GM defines Super Cruise as more than just a convenience feature—it considers it the core platform for advancing to next-generation autonomous driving technology. Starting with the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028, the company plans to introduce “eyes-off” driving technology, which will not require the driver’s gaze to remain on the road. This technology will be available for both internal combustion engine vehicles and electric vehicles, and can be extended across various brands and price ranges.

Rashed Haq, Vice President of GM’s Autonomous Driving Division, stated, “The 1 billion miles (1.6 billion kilometers) of hands-free driving accomplished by our customers is only the beginning. Super Cruise is the essential foundation connecting today’s hands-free driving to the autonomous technologies of tomorrow. Building on more than 100 years of manufacturing expertise, GM will continue to provide automated driving experiences to customers across a wide range of price points.”

This technological vision is supported by high levels of customer engagement. Over the past 12 months, customers have used Super Cruise for a total of 7.1 million hours across about 28.7 million trips, driving 800 million kilometers hands-free. This averages to about 1.6 million kilometers per day.

Analysis of usage patterns shows that, on average, hands-free driving is maintained for 24 minutes per use, and more than half of all users engage the feature at least once a week. Notably, 85% of users utilized it at least once a month. This high level of satisfaction and frequent use has also translated into strong subscription performance, with the number of subscriptions expected to exceed 850,000 by the end of the year.

Over the past year, the number of vehicles equipped with Super Cruise has increased by 70%, and the daily user base has grown by 80%, reflecting rapid growth. By applying Super Cruise to a wider range of vehicle models, GM is improving accessibility so that more customers can experience advanced driving technology.

GM plans to leverage the real-world, road-based data accumulated through Super Cruise to further enhance current features and accelerate the development of next-generation autonomous driving technology. The company also intends to strengthen its integrated software and service platform centered around OnStar.
