Roh Yongmin of the Democratic Party Urges Approval of Chungbuk Governor Primary Retrial: "Call for Transparent Reinvestigation"

Former Presidential Chief of Staff Noh Young-min urged the Democratic Party to grant his request for a reexamination regarding the primary for Chungbuk governor on April 8. Noh previously lost to Shin Yong-han, Vice Chair of the Presidential Committee for Balanced National Development, in the final Democratic Party primary for Chungbuk governor, which is part of the nationwide local elections scheduled for June 3.

Noh claimed that Vice Chair Shin used illegally leaked party member lists for his campaign activities. He stated, "The Democratic Party's Chungbuk member list was leaked a second time and was systematically used for the benefit of a particular candidate during the primary process," adding, "This had a significant and unfair impact on the primary."

He continued, "A whistleblower from within Vice Chair Shin's campaign reported numerous illegal activities during the primary to both the police and the election commission, and also provided information to our side. According to the complaint that I personally verified, highly specific allegations include illegal campaigning using cell phones registered under borrowed names and proxy payments for aides' salaries."

Noh emphasized, "I am not standing here today to address personal grievances. I am here to reveal to the public the reality of the Chungbuk Provincial Party, which has been ruined by various illegalities, irregularities in party membership rights restrictions, and the leaking of party member lists, and to urge the party to deliver a stern judgment on these unlawful acts that undermine the foundation of democracy."

He also stated, "Party leader Jung Cheong-rae has always stressed 'party member sovereignty,' but in Chungbuk, this principle is being trampled. I earnestly and strongly request the Democratic Party’s reexamination committee and leadership to take action."

He added, "I urge the party leadership and the reexamination committee to make a principled and resolute decision and immediately conduct a transparent reinvestigation of the Chungbuk Provincial Party."

Previously, Noh submitted a request for reexamination to the party's central reexamination committee on April 6. The Democratic Party is currently proceeding with the reexamination process for Noh’s case.
