Gyeonggi Province has predicted that cherry blossoms (King cherry trees) will begin to bloom starting in Bucheon at the end of March, followed by Suwon, Osan, Gwangju, Anyang, Gimpo, and Namyangju in early April.
The province stated that cherry blossoms reach full bloom within a week after the initial blooming, allowing people to fully enjoy the flowers.
Specifically, the predicted blooming dates are: March 31 at Wonmisan (Bucheon), followed by King cherry trees blooming between April 1 and 6 at the former Gyeonggi Provincial Government Building (Suwon), Mulhyanggi Arboretum (Osan), Namhansanseong Fortress (Gwangju), Surisan Mountain (Anyang), Suansan Mountain (Gimpo), and Chukryeongsan Mountain (Namyangju).
Compared to last year, the analysis showed that the blooming period is 3 to 11 days earlier, due to higher average temperatures in March compared to the previous year.
The Gyeonggi Forest Environment Research Institute, in collaboration with the Korea National Arboretum, predicted the blooming periods for seven popular cherry blossom spots in Gyeonggi Province. This was based on data collected over the past 15 years, monitoring 71 forest plant species susceptible to climate change across four mountainous areas.
The predictions were made by observing when the brown bud scales of King cherry trees began to fall off in mountainous areas from early March, and then analyzing these findings with past records of blooming start dates and confirmation dates collected over the previous 15 years.
Jeong Taekjun, Director of the Gyeonggi Forest Environment Research Institute, stated, "While the blooming dates on conventional spring flower maps are based on statistical data using temperature factors, our institute’s data is more accurate since we directly confirm the flower buds. Cherry blossoms reach full bloom within 3 to 7 days after blooming begins, so I hope everyone refers to this information and enjoys a delightful spring flower season."
