The farm in question raises approximately 16,000 meat ducks. The H5 avian influenza antigen was detected during a surveillance inspection at the breeding stage, and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency is currently determining whether the virus is highly pathogenic.
Immediately after the antigen was detected, Jeollanam-do dispatched two members of the initial response team from the Livestock Health Control Support Headquarters to restrict access to the farm. The authorities plan to carry out disease control measures, including culling. Additionally, two field supervisors have been sent to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the outbreak.
To prevent further spread, thorough inspections are being conducted at all poultry farms within a 10 km disease control zone around the affected farm. All available disinfection resources are being mobilized to disinfect surrounding roads near streams and reservoirs, as well as access roads to poultry farms.
In order to detect infected animals as early as possible, comprehensive inspections and disease control checks are also being conducted at all farms belonging to the same affiliated company as the affected farm.
Jeollanam-do has issued a 24-hour standstill order, effective until 1:00 p.m. on March 20, for the affiliated company where the outbreak occurred, local duck farms, and related livestock facilities (such as slaughterhouses and feed factories), as well as livestock transport vehicles. Simultaneous disinfection and compliance checks are being carried out at poultry farms and related facilities.
As of March 19, a total of 58 cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been reported nationwide, with 10 cases confirmed in Jeollanam-do in the cities of Naju, Yeongam, Gokseong, and Gurye.
