Five Teams Participate in International Design Competition for Hwaseong City Museum of Art

Winning Team to Be Selected in February Next Year
Museum Aims to Open in 2029

Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province announced that five teams from both Korea and abroad will participate in the international invited design competition for the Hwaseong City Museum of Art, which will be built in the Dongtan 2 District.

According to Hwaseong City, the city announced on the 24th that, following the review of the operations committee held last month to prepare for the design competition notice, it has invited the following teams: Shin Changhun (Unsangdong Architects), Heo Seogu (Heoseogu Architects) + Park Jeyu (Jeyu Architects), Ko Juseok (Architecture Workshop Architects) + Christian de Portzamparc (2Portzamparc), Yoo Taewon (Sunjin Engineering & Architecture) + Astrid Piber (UN Studio), and Choi Euncheol (Sshop Architects) + Toyo Ito.


Following the announcement, the invited teams will begin the full-scale design process, and the final winning team will be selected through a review in February next year. The winning team will be granted the preferential negotiation rights for the design contract of the Hwaseong City Museum of Art.


Jung Myunggeun, Mayor of Hwaseong City, stated, "This design competition, which features participation from world-renowned architects, marks an important starting point for the Hwaseong City Museum of Art to become a cultural and artistic landmark representing the city," adding, "We will do our best to ensure the museum itself becomes a work of art."



The Hwaseong City Museum of Art, with a total project budget of approximately 58.5 billion won, is being developed with the goal of opening in 2029 on a site of about 8,000 square meters in Osan-dong 1010, within the Dongtan 2 District.
