Wonju City in Gangwon Province will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the long-awaited “Wonju City Museum of Art” at 2:30 p.m. on November 27 at Taejang-dong Camprong Citizen Park, marking the official start of the project.
The Wonju City Museum of Art will be built with a total project cost of 21.4 billion won, including 10.4 billion won from the provincial government and 11 billion won from the city government. The museum will be a three-story building with a total floor area of 4,843.06 square meters. Completion is targeted for May 2027, with plans to open in the second half of the same year.
Inside the museum, there will be three exhibition halls for professional displays, a storage facility, and a curatorial research room. In addition, there will be a caf? and lounge areas for citizens to freely enjoy, establishing the museum as a complex cultural and artistic hub that goes beyond a simple exhibition space to foster communication with the community.
Prior to the museum’s opening, Wonju City plans to proactively expand cultural experiences for citizens and raise anticipation for the new museum by offering a variety of art events starting next year, including hands-on exhibition programs for youth and children.
Won Kangsu, Mayor of Wonju, stated, “The city museum of art will become the new heart of culture and the arts in Wonju,” adding, “We will focus all our efforts on ensuring the safe and successful construction of the museum so that it can serve as a hub for cultural exchange, where anyone can encounter art and find inspiration in their daily lives.”
