A new brand identity (BI) has been created for Myeongdong Square in Jung-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Gil-seong). On the 2nd, the district announced that the BI was designed by shaping the 'M' of Myeongdong Square and harmoniously combining the unique colors representing the four major squares.
Myeongdong Square means Myeongdong embracing four squares that will illuminate the Republic of Korea. The four primary colors of light (C, M, Y, K) were incorporated into this place where a festival of light will unfold. The meaning of each color was modernly reinterpreted and embodied in the four squares.
According to Jung-gu, C Square (Euljiro 1(il)-ga Station intersection) provides a space for rest, relaxation, and leisure. The cyan color symbolizing rest was infused into a space for modern people in need of relaxation within the city. It is planned to be developed as a space where people can rest through natural healing content including landscaping.
M Square (Myeongdong-gil) features magenta, full of passion, representing creativity, creation, and enthusiasm. It will be designed as a space where various artists can showcase diverse content, evoking creativity and passion.
Y Square (from Lotte Department Store to the entrance of Myeongdong-gil) is expressed with the rich and vibrant image of yellow. This area gathers the largest media presence and foot traffic, where shopping, food, and tourism infrastructure will synergize to transform it into a prosperous square where businesses and small merchants coexist and thrive together.
K Square (around Shinsegae Department Store) represents formality and nobility with black. It is composed as a space showcasing formal artworks that are rarely encountered, providing passersby with new artistic experiences.
Jung-gu plans to install electronic billboards sequentially at Hana Bank, Lotte Department Store, and the Kyowon Building by the first half of next year, starting with Shinsegae Department Store in November. On the last day of this year, a New Year's countdown event is also planned around Shinsegae Department Store, aiming to create a spectacle similar to New York's Times Square.
District Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “Myeongdong Square, a new landmark of Korea, will offer visitors an unprecedented and overwhelming impression. The day when the festival of light will unfold is not far off, so please look forward to Myeongdong shining even brighter beyond each individual light.”
