Ahead of the opening of the 105th National Winter Sports Festival, the Gwangju Metropolitan City team made a smooth start at the preliminary competitions held from the 11th to the 13th.
The Gwangju Sports Council announced on the 15th that they won 1 gold and 2 silver medals in the speed skating events.
The first gold medal was won by speed skater Jang Yun-woo (Seongdeok Elementary School, 6th grade).
He won the gold medal in the boys' elementary school 1500m (2’13:14), earned 55 points (5’31:10) in the mass start event, and won two silver medals with a time of 3’01:71 in the 2000m race.
Jang said, “I fell in love with the charm of speed skating and trained by commuting weekly between Seoul and Gwangju. I am very happy and feel that this achievement is valuable because it was accomplished without missing training despite the cold weather.”
Jeon Gap-su, president of the Gwangju Sports Council, said, “I am very pleased that our team has made a smooth start to the 105th National Winter Sports Festival despite difficult circumstances. I am grateful to the young prospects who train individually in Seoul every week despite Gwangju’s poor ice rink conditions.”
