A university in the Busan area is attracting attention by hosting an event to promote Korean kimchi culture locally in Australia.
On the 23rd local time, about 30 staff members and students from Gyeongnam Information University’s local training group held the ‘1st Kimchi Day’ event at a Korean restaurant (The Charcoal BBQ House) located in Brisbane, Australia.
The event, co-hosted with James Cook University Brisbane, Gyeongnam Information University’s sister university in Australia, was attended by President Kim Dae-sik, about 30 Gyeongnam Information University students studying language at James Cook University, volunteers including representatives from the Brisbane Korean Association, and others.
Additionally, about 200 local dignitaries representing the region, including Brisbane Mayor Adrian Schrinner, local members of parliament, and city councilors, attended, drawing significant interest from the Korean community, local media, and residents.
Gyeongnam Information University students and participants experienced making kimchi together in a ‘Kimchi Making’ session and enjoyed various Korean dishes such as bulgogi prepared by the Korean Association. They also distributed traditional Korean fans prepared in advance to local participants, promoting the Republic of Korea and K-Food.

President Kim Dae-sik said, “This was a valuable event where university students acted as civilian diplomats, promoting our country’s culture abroad and contributing to the Busan World Expo bid.”
He added, “Going forward, Gyeongnam Information University will do its best to promote Korea and provide diverse experiences for students together with over 100 sister universities worldwide.”
On the 24th, President Kim and other Gyeongnam Information University officials plan to meet with James Cook University representatives to discuss student and university exchanges and hold a meeting with students currently undergoing local training.
