Gangnam CHA Hospital of CHA University announced on the 4th that it has achieved 5,000 cases of obstetrics and gynecology robotic surgeries in the shortest period domestically.
Gangnam CHA Hospital first performed robotic surgery in 2015 in collaboration with the infertility center to preserve fertility and improve patients' quality of life after surgery. In August 2021, the latest equipment, the 'da Vinci XI,' was additionally introduced.
Robotic surgery has the advantage of accurately treating narrow and deep areas, with almost no visible scars after surgery. It is also characterized by less pain, faster recovery, and fewer complications, resulting in high patient satisfaction.

In particular, as the incidence of uterine and ovarian diseases among young women increases and fertility preservation becomes more important, the significance of a minimally invasive surgical system linked to gynecology, infertility, and obstetrics has been further highlighted, leading to a sharp increase in obstetrics and gynecology robotic surgeries. Looking at the age distribution of patients visiting the Gangnam CHA Hospital Robotic Surgery Center, 94% were women of reproductive age between their 20s and 40s, with 30s at 45.0%, 40s at 38.4%, and 20s at 10.7%, and 40.9% were unmarried.
Based on diagnosis, myomectomy accounted for the largest portion at 65.5%, followed by ovarian tumor removal at 20.1%, and surgeries for gynecologic cancers and other diseases at 14.4%. Among these, 89% of patients were able to preserve their uterus or maintain ovarian function to the maximum extent without undergoing hysterectomy, thus preserving fertility.
Seong Seok-ju, director of the Robotic Surgery Center who has performed over 1,300 gynecologic robotic surgeries, said, "We will strengthen clinical and research efforts on fertility preservation treatments accumulated through treating numerous complex disease patients, advance the patient-centered care system, and strive to perform optimal surgeries tailored to each patient."
Roh Dong-young, director of Gangnam CHA Hospital, said, "The foundation for performing more than 1,100 gynecologic robotic surgeries annually for the first time in Korea and achieving the highest 5,000 cases domestically lies in the pioneering spirit of performing the first laparoscopic surgery in Korea and the rapid diagnosis considering the female life cycle as a specialized obstetrics and gynecology hospital, as well as the accumulated proficiency of medical staff. We plan to expand robotic surgery to various departments beyond obstetrics and gynecology by increasing operating rooms and introducing additional equipment."
