Two Grant Zebras Born Consecutively at Gwangju Uchi Zoo Celebration

At Gwangju Uchi Zoo, visitors can now see a mother and daughter Grant's zebras.

The Gwangju Uchi Park Management Office announced on the 27th that two Grant's zebras living in Uchi Zoo have consecutively given birth to offspring.

Until now, there were four Grant's zebras living in Uchi Zoo: two females, one male, and one foal.

Among them, the female named ‘Mangi’ gave birth to ‘Oi’ (male) in May, and this month, ‘Pose’ gave birth to ‘Tori’ (female), increasing the number of foals to three. Oi and Tori were born about 1 meter tall and are growing healthily under the protection of their mother zebras.

Grant's zebras inhabit East Africa and have a body length of about 2.2 to 2.4 meters. The foals nurse from their mothers for about a year after birth.

Uchi Zoo has opened the ‘Zebra House,’ where Grant's zebras live, so that citizens can see the rare sight of zebra foals nursing, which is difficult to observe even in the wild.

Ji Taekyung, director of Uchi Park Zoo, said, “We are striving to preserve and propagate animal species that are endangered due to climate change and habitat destruction,” and added, “We ask for citizens’ interest so that Uchi Zoo can be reborn as an ecological zoo.”
