[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] As the COVID-19 Omicron variant continues to spread, nearly 210,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 6 p.m. on the 1st.
According to Seoul and other local governments, from midnight to 6 p.m. on the same day, 208,149 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19. This is 12,692 fewer than the 220,841 cases reported at the same time the previous day. Compared to the figure from the same time one week ago on the 25th (259,192 cases), it is 51,043 fewer, and compared to two weeks ago on the 18th (284,280 cases), it is 76,131 fewer. Since there is still time until midnight when the tally is finalized, the number of new confirmed cases announced on the 2nd is expected to be higher than this.
New confirmed cases were 103,845 (49.9%) in the metropolitan area and 104,304 (50.1%) in non-metropolitan areas. By region, the numbers are: Gyeonggi 50,188, Seoul 42,226, Gyeongnam 12,911, Chungnam 11,786, Incheon 11,431, Gyeongbuk 11,357, Jeonnam 10,372, Daegu 8,800, Busan 8,553, Jeonbuk 7,767, Gwangju 7,670, Gangwon 6,908, Ulsan 5,597, Daejeon 5,153, Chungbuk 3,901, Jeju 2,951, and Sejong 5,078.
From the 26th of last month, the daily new confirmed cases for one week were 335,541 → 318,075 → 187,182 → 347,500 → 424,614 → 320,743 → 280,273, averaging 316,275 cases per day.
