[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Song Sam-seok, honorary chairman and founder of Mona, passed away from an illness around 12:30 PM on the 1st. He was born on January 19, 1928, and was 94 years old at the time of his passing.


Chairman Song graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Economics in 1952. In 1960, he established Kwangshin Chemical Industry, the predecessor of Monami, and began producing Monami's flagship product, the 153 ballpoint pen, in 1963. After changing the company name to Monami in 1974, he led the company until 1997, when he turned 70.



Chairman Song is survived by his eldest son, Song Ha-kyung, chairman of Monami; his second son, Song Ha-cheol, vice chairman; and his third son, Song Ha-yoon, president. The funeral will be held at the Yonsei University Sinchon Severance Hospital funeral hall, with the funeral service scheduled for the 4th.
