Choi Min-jeong (Seongnam City Hall) took the first step toward defending her title in the women's short track 1500m at the Winter Olympics. On the 16th, at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing, China, she was the first to cross the finish line in the first heat of the quarterfinals of the women's 1500m short track at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. After starting from the back and cautiously observing, she surged to the front with eleven laps remaining. Using her characteristic outside lane sprint, she comfortably left behind Zhang Yuting (China), Petra J?szap?ti (Hungary), Rianne de Vries (Netherlands), Kamila Stormowska (Poland), and Arianna Sighel (Italy). Due to a malfunction in the venue's timing system, official times were not released. The remaining lap count was also not displayed on the screen, causing temporary confusion among the athletes.
Choi Min-jeong holds the world record in this event. In November 2016, at the 2016-2017 International Skating Union (ISU) Short Track World Cup 2nd event held at the Utah Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, USA, she finished the semifinal in 2 minutes 14.354 seconds. At the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, she won the gold medal with a time of 2 minutes 24.948 seconds.
