Wando West Road, Popular Coastal Drive Course

National Route 77, Rich in Cultural Tourism Resources and Outstanding Natural Scenic Resources

National Route 77 is a general national road that connects the Korean Peninsula in an L-shape from Paju along the west coast through Wando to Busan, and the Wando section is about 23 km from Wando Bridge to Wando County Office.

The reason why the West Road is spotlighted as a coastal drive course is that cultural tourism resources are scattered around, vehicle traffic is light making it safe, and drivers can comfortably enjoy the coastal scenery while driving.

In particular, a wide variety of cultural tourism resources are distributed, and if you turn right immediately after crossing Wando Bridge, your Wando trip begins, and within 5 minutes you arrive at Wando Arboretum, the largest subtropical arboretum in Korea.

About 5 minutes by car from the arboretum is Cheonghae Port filming site, popular as a location for movies and dramas, and about 5 minutes from there you can enjoy various experiences at the Wando Fishing Village Folk Exhibition Hall, where you can see the history and lifestyle of fishing villages at a glance.

Near the Fishing Village Folk Exhibition Hall at Hwahaengpo Port, you can take a passenger ship to travel to Nohwado, the largest abalone production area in Korea, Soando, an island you want to visit, and Bogildo, a floating island garden on the sea.

Jeongdori Gugaedeung Beach, National Scenic Site No. 3, is currently the most notable place among Wando tourist attractions.

The Cultural Heritage Administration produced and provided a mind-healing content video featuring the sound of waves hitting the pebbles and the coastal scenery formed by nine steps to relieve the stress of citizens who have difficulty going outside due to COVID-19, gaining popularity.

Gugaedeung is gaining popularity as the background of the JTBC drama Chocolate, which depicts the sweet and poignant romance of young men and women, and is considered the best dating spot.

In addition to various cultural tourism and natural scenic resources, there are three pocket parks popular as resting places: Gaetbaram Park, Miso Park, and Sunset Park.

The common feature of these three parks is that the sea view is excellent, and the sunset and dusk are also spectacular.

Jeollanam-do selected and announced Wando West Road (National Route 77) as a recommended tourist destination with the theme of “Coastal Drive Road Riding the Spring Breeze.”

This was the result of careful selection by a selection committee composed of influential experts such as travel writers and travel journalists who spread content.

Wando West Road is also called the “Wando B, T, S Road.” B, T, S stands for Blue Tour Start, meaning “the road to start Wando tourism.”

Blue Tour is a core project among the five strategic projects of the Blue Economy promoted by Jeollanam-do to lead sustainable future regional development.

Shin Woo-cheol, Wando County Governor, said, “To advance the era of 5 million tourists through the promotion of ‘2021 Wando Visit Year,’ we will firmly establish National Route 77 coastal road as the best drive course in Korea and promote tourism activation strategies for Wando-eup, Gunoe, and Sinji areas so that the surrounding tourism resources can become vibrant.”

In addition, as part of the project to expand tourism resources in the Wando West Road section of Route 77, a water play facility for family recreation will be completed by July in Cheondunggol below Wando Arboretum.
