[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] Gyeongnam National University announced on the 20th that it has been selected as the lead institution for the Yeongnam region in the Ministry of Unification's '2020 Regional Unification Education Center' project.
The 'Regional Unification Education Center' is a project conducted to activate unification education by selecting regional institutions with the will and capacity for unification education.
Gyeongnam National University has already successfully carried out the Ministry of Education's 'Unification Security Talent Development Project for the Unification Era' and the Ministry of Unification's 'Unification Education Leading University Development Project' for four years. Additionally, it hosted the Ministry of Unification's 'Korean Peninsula International Forum' (KGF) twice (2015, 2018) targeting major countries worldwide, and from this year, it has been selected as the lead institution for the overseas North Korea and Unification Studies academic exchange support project.
This project is directly led by President Park Jae-kyu (former Minister of Unification), an expert on unification and North Korean issues, as the center director.
As the importance of unification education in local communities continues to increase, the Ministry of Unification has reorganized and restructured the project from this year into a system of seven regional unification education centers based on regions, instead of the previous 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, to operate a more substantial 'Regional Unification Education Center.'
The Yeongnam Regional Unification Education Center, for which Gyeongnam National University was selected as the lead institution, integrates the existing unification education centers of five areas: Gyeongnam, Busan, Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Ulsan.
