[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) is operating the "2020 Dongdaemun-gu Resident Participatory Budget" to encourage proactive participation of residents in district administration and to ensure transparency and representativeness in financial management.

The resident participatory budget for this year, which will be reflected in the 2021 budget plan, is a total of 1 billion KRW. Project funds can be applied for within the range of a minimum of 5 million KRW to a maximum of 50 million KRW per individual project.

The proposals should be small-scale, community-based projects prioritized for regional development and welfare improvement. Any resident, or employees and students of companies, organizations, or schools located in the area, can submit proposals.

Residents wishing to propose projects can visit the 8th floor of Dongdaemun-gu Office's Autonomous Administration Division or any of the 14 community service centers in person, or submit by mail (Dongdaemun-gu, Cheonho-daero 145, 8th floor, Autonomous Administration Division).

Proposals can also be submitted through the district office website (www.ddm.go.kr) under Administrative Information (Budget/Settlement → Resident Participatory Budget System → Apply for Resident Participatory Budget).

The submission period for project proposals is until May 19.

After reviewing the submitted proposals by the relevant departments, the district will collect residents' opinions through mobile (internet) voting from June 29 to July 9.

Then, the final selection of resident participatory budget projects will be made by combining the results of the Resident Participatory Budget Committee review (60%) and mobile voting (40%).

You Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "We look forward to diverse ideas from residents who know the region best," and added, "We will continue to activate the resident participatory budget system to take the lead in realizing local decentralization and fiscal democracy."

Last year, Dongdaemun-gu selected 39 projects worth approximately 819 million KRW as resident participatory budget projects after departmental review, electronic voting, and Resident Participatory Budget Committee deliberation and adjustment, out of a total of 86 proposed projects worth about 2.094 billion KRW.
