Traces of Goryeo Fortress Defending Against Wako Found in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] Traces of fortress facilities presumed to have been constructed to monitor and defend against Wako pirates appearing along the East Coast have been confirmed in Yeongdeok, Gyeongbuk. Seongrim Cultural Heritage Research Institute, an archaeological investigation agency, reported on the 5th that they discovered the Yangseong-ri site in the construction area of Expressway No. 65 between Pohang and Yeongdeok. The site includes a Goryeo wooden palisade fortress made by mixing soil and stones, 12 building sites, and drainage facilities. It is estimated to have been built during the Goryeo period. The fortress was constructed on the summit of a 56-meter-high hill located 1 km west from the coastline. The circumference of the fortress is approximately 400 meters, and the internal area is estimated to be about 10,000 square meters.
