Axios reported on May 6 (local time), citing sources, that the United States and Iran are close to reaching a one-page ceasefire agreement. According to Axios, this is the closest the two sides have come to an agreement since the outbreak of the war.
According to Axios, the White House expects to receive a response from Iran regarding a one-page memorandum of understanding (MOU) agreement within the next 48 hours. The MOU currently under discussion consists of a total of 14 items, with the main points being: ▲ Iran's promise to temporarily suspend nuclear enrichment ▲ The United States' phased lifting of sanctions on Iran and the sequential release of frozen funds ▲ The lifting of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Axios stated, "If an agreement is reached, a 30-day detailed negotiation period will begin, with Islamabad, Pakistan or Geneva, Switzerland being mentioned as possible locations." The report also noted that, during this 30-day period, restrictions on Iran's passage through the strait and the U.S. maritime blockade are expected to be lifted in stages. Conversely, if negotiations break down, Axios pointed out that U.S. forces may resume military operations.
Furthermore, Axios analyzed that U.S. President Donald Trump's abrupt decision to suspend 'Project Freedom' in the Strait of Hormuz, which he announced the previous day, was due to this progress in negotiations.
Previously, President Donald Trump announced via his social networking service (SNS), Truth Social, on May 5 that Project Freedom would be temporarily suspended, stating, "We have taken into account the requests from Pakistan and other countries, the tremendous military successes we have achieved during operations against Iran, and the significant progress made toward a complete and final agreement with the Iranian delegation."
