The Iranian Embassy in South Korea asserted that it bears no responsibility for the fire that broke out on a South Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on May 4, 2026.

In a statement released on May 6, the Iranian Embassy declared, "The Iranian Embassy firmly rejects and strongly denies all allegations that the military forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran were involved in the incident concerning damages sustained by the South Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz." The statement further stressed, "In order to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, it is necessary to coordinate with Iranian authorities, follow designated routes, and fully comply with relevant regulations, including heeding warnings from the Iranian side."

Previously, on May 4, a fire broke out on the South Korean cargo ship HMM Namu, which was anchored in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to suspicions that the incident may have been the result of an Iranian attack. However, Iranian officials have drawn a clear line, denying any responsibility.

The Iranian Embassy emphasized that, amid heightened regional tensions due to conflict with the United States, disregarding the demands of the Iranian authorities "could result in unintended incidents." The Embassy added that "the responsibility for such consequences lies with those who operate or travel in the region without paying due attention to these considerations."
