People Power Party to Launch Joint Struggle with Opposition Parties and Civic Groups Against Prosecution Cancellation Special Prosecutor

Likely to Abstain from the Constitutional Amendment Vote

On May 6, the People Power Party announced that it would launch a joint struggle in partnership with opposition parties, civic organizations, and citizens who oppose the special prosecutor bill (prosecution cancellation special prosecutor) being promoted by the ruling party regarding the suspicions of manipulated investigations and indictments under the Yoon Suk Yeol administration. In addition, the People Power Party called on the judiciary to immediately resume the five trials against President Lee Jae-myung.

According to Yoo Sangbeom, the Senior Deputy Floor Leader, the People Power Party held a general assembly of lawmakers at the National Assembly that afternoon and adopted a resolution reflecting these positions.

The resolution adopted by the People Power Party on this day includes: ▲ Strong opposition to the special prosecutor bill promoted by the Democratic Party of Korea ▲ Firm opposition to any unconstitutional or illegal attempts to cancel the indictment of President Lee Jae-myung ▲ Launching a joint struggle with all parties, civic groups, and citizens who oppose the cancellation of the indictment against President Lee ▲ Strongly urging the judiciary to immediately resume the five trials against President Lee ▲ Resolutely confronting the actions of the ruling party, which the party claims are turning the Republic of Korea into a republic of criminals.

Regarding the joint struggle with other parties and civic groups, Senior Deputy Floor Leader Yoo said, "Even People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy and the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice are opposed to this. This proves that there are still conscientious intellectuals within the progressive and leftist circles." He added, "We have sent official letters to various organizations, academic societies, the Constitutional Law Society, and lawyers' associations, requesting their positions on the unconstitutionality and illegality of the prosecution cancellation special prosecutor, and we will strive for close cooperation."

Meanwhile, the People Power Party appears likely to abstain from participating in the vote on the constitutional amendment bill scheduled for the National Assembly plenary session on May 7. Senior Deputy Floor Leader Yoo stated, "The Democratic Party of Korea unilaterally pushed this forward to coincide with the local elections without sufficient discussion or deliberation, so the majority opinion among lawmakers at the general assembly was that it would not be appropriate to participate in the vote."
