The Democratic Party of Korea has decided to strategically nominate Im Munyoung, Standing Vice Chair of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, as its candidate for the Gwangju Gwangsan-eul parliamentary by-election, which will be held alongside the June 3 local elections. The party plans to officially announce the nomination during the welcoming ceremony for newly selected talent to be held at the National Assembly on the morning of May 6.

원본보기 아이콘According to the political community on May 5, Vice Chair Im was born in Gwangju in 1966 and graduated from Gwangju Salesio High School and Yonsei University’s Department of Political Science and International Studies. He later received a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Communication and Public Relations at Yonsei University and a doctorate from Hoseo University’s Graduate School of Technology Management.
He participated in PC communication-based online communities such as HiTEL and Naunuri, and was a founding member of Nowcom. He also gained media management experience as the head of the iMBC Media Center and was involved in editing and operating news at the National Assembly.
In the policy field, during Lee Jaemyung’s tenure as Governor of Gyeonggi Province, he served as Director of Information Policy and Director of Future Growth Policy, overseeing policies on artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and digital transformation. He later served as Executive Director of the Gyeonggi Institute of Science & Technology Promotion.
During last year’s presidential election, he served as Chair of the Digital Special Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea, participating in the design of related campaign pledges. After the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung administration, he has been responsible for developing the government’s AI strategy as the Standing Vice Chair of the Presidential National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee.
A by-election was triggered in Gwangju Gwangsan-eul after former district lawmaker Min Hyungbae ran for the Jeonnam Gwangju Special Mayor election.
