Britney Spears Admits to Reckless Driving... Sentenced to One Year Probation

Arrested in March for High-Speed Driving

Lighter Sentence Likely Due to Plea Agreement

Pop star Britney Spears, 44, has admitted to reckless driving involving drugs and has been placed on probation.

On May 4 (local time), The New York Times and AFP reported that the Ventura County Superior Court in California ordered Spears to serve one year of probation and to complete a three-month abuse prevention education program. Spears was also fined $571 (approximately 840,000 won) and sentenced to one day in jail. However, since she had already spent a day in custody after being arrested for reckless driving, she was not required to serve additional jail time.

This ruling was made after Spears admitted to charges of reckless driving related to alcohol or drug use. Prosecutors had initially charged her with 'driving under the influence (DUI)' of alcohol or drugs, but after a plea agreement, a lesser charge was applied.

Spears was arrested by local police on March 4 in Ventura County after driving at an abnormally high speed. At the time, police administered a blood alcohol test and stated that Spears was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Neither the prosecution nor the court disclosed which drugs Spears had used. Spears and her representatives issued an apology regarding the incident. In a statement to U.S. media, her spokesperson said, "There is absolutely no excuse," and added, "Britney will follow the law and take the right actions, and we hope this will be the first step toward the changes Britney has long needed in her life."

Spears has a previous record of traffic-related incidents. In 2007, she was charged in a hit-and-run accident that resulted in property damage.

Commenting on the verdict, Spears' attorney Michael Goldstein said, "Given the circumstances, everyone is satisfied with the outcome," adding, "Britney will do well, and we are all rooting for her."

Spears is regarded as a leading pop star of the 1990s and 2000s, with hit songs such as "Toxic" and "Baby One More Time." She has also been at the center of controversy several times due to her eccentric behavior. In 2007, she suddenly shaved her head and struck a photographer's car with an umbrella. Afterward, her father, Jamie Spears, became her legal conservator for 13 years, even after she reached adulthood.
