Yangcheon District Mayoral Candidate Lee Gijae to Pursue Mixed-Use Development of Relocated Sinjeong Train Depot Site

Designating the Area as a Business and Commercial District
Developing a Work-Life Proximity City

On May 5, Lee Gijae, the People Power Party candidate for Yangcheon District mayor, announced plans to relocate the Sinjeong Train Depot and designate the vacated site as a zone for work and commercial use, with the aim of developing it as a mixed-use complex.

Lee stated that the relocated depot site would be developed as a key hub for a "work-life proximity city," minimizing commuting distances. The plan envisions establishing a self-sustaining economic base centered on work and commercial facilities, and reorganizing the area into a high-density mixed-use urban space incorporating residential, cultural, and leisure functions.

In his tenure as mayor-elect, Lee met with Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul, on June 23, 2022, and requested a review of the Sinjeong Train Depot relocation through the extension of Seoul Metro Line 2 Sinjeong Branch. In December 2024, he submitted a proposal titled "Seoul Metro Line 2 Sinjeong Branch Extension to Gimpo and Sinjeong Train Depot Relocation" to the Metropolitan Area Transportation Committee for inclusion in the "5th Metropolitan Area Comprehensive Transportation Implementation Plan."

Alongside this, a "Land Use Planning Service for the Sinjeong Train Depot Site"-including land use planning and feasibility studies for the relocated site-is being jointly pursued by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Gimpo City.

Through these initiatives, Lee aims to simultaneously create jobs and stimulate consumption and inflow within the region, positioning Yangcheon District as the economic center of southwestern Seoul. Lee Gijae emphasized, "The relocation of the Sinjeong Train Depot is more than just a facility move; it is a turning point that will fundamentally transform the urban structure of Yangcheon District. I will ensure the realization of both transportation innovation and urban reorganization as a key campaign pledge."
