Jeong Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on May 5 regarding the timing and procedure for handling the "Special Prosecutor Bill on Suspicions of Fabricated Investigations and Prosecutions by the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration," that "We will gather the collective will of the people, party members, and National Assembly members to make the best possible choice."
After a campaign event at the Geun Market in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi Province, Jeong spoke with reporters, saying, "There was a briefing at the presidential office yesterday, so the party and the presidential office need to coordinate," indicating the current situation.
He added, "Since the presidential office has already stated its position, the party will determine the best course of action after consulting both at the general assembly of lawmakers and with party members. As party leader, I have maintained a principled stance, and that principle remains unchanged."
Jeong also said, "If there are citizens who have suffered due to unjust and fabricated indictments, whether they are ordinary people, members of the National Assembly, or even the president, the spirit of the Constitution is that everyone deserves equal relief. If, under the prosecutorial dictatorship of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, political prosecutors, obsessed with 'targeting Lee Jae-myung,' tried to indict and punish based on false fabrication, that in itself constitutes a crime."
However, the Democratic Party appears to be slowing down its approach to the special prosecutor bill on fabricated indictments after the presidential office suggested that further deliberation was needed. The previous day, Hong Ik-pyo, Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs, stated in a briefing, "It is essential to uncover the truth and restore judicial justice through a special prosecutor." He added, "However, President Lee has asked the ruling Democratic Party to carefully consider public opinion and go through a process of deliberation before deciding on the specific timing and procedure."
