Insurance Premiums for Delivery Electric Motorcycles to Drop

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on May 5 that it had reached an agreement with the Delivery Services Mutual Aid Association to lower the mutual insurance premiums for electric two-wheeled vehicles used for delivery. This measure, aimed at promoting the adoption of electric two-wheelers, will take effect starting May 6.

The association has expanded the discount rate for mutual insurance premiums for electric two-wheelers from the previous 1% to 17.5%. Previously, if a delivery worker used an electric two-wheeler, the annual premium for the mutual insurance policy was KRW 780,000 based on one year without accidents after enrollment, which was not significantly different from the KRW 790,000 for internal combustion engine vehicles. However, with this new measure, the Ministry expects the premium to drop to KRW 650,000.

The association also plans to raise the discount rates for existing special clauses related to traffic safety in the second half of the year, in order to further reduce the insurance burden for workers who participate in accident prevention activities. Currently, there are discounts of 1.5% for installing a front license plate, up to 3% for completing safety training, and up to 3% for installing a driving recorder.

The association also plans to introduce a specialized personal injury insurance product for drivers in the second half of the year to support recovery from accidents. This product is designed to provide comprehensive injury coverage tailored to the high-risk nature of delivery work at a reasonable premium. The Ministry expects this will help reduce threats to workers' livelihoods and strengthen the social safety net.

These mutual insurance products can be purchased through the Delivery Services Mutual Aid Association's mobile application or website. Jae Soon Park, Director General for Transport Logistics Policy at the Ministry, stated, "We hope this measure will help ease the burden on delivery workers struggling with high fuel prices and serve as an opportunity to promote the transition to eco-friendly transportation."
