In Australia, violent protests broke out as enraged local residents collectively assaulted the suspect in the murder of a 5-year-old Indigenous girl who was found dead.
According to reports from BBC and other foreign media on the 4th (local time), Australian police have recently charged Jefferson Lewis, 47, with child murder. Lewis is accused of killing a 5-year-old girl in an Indigenous community near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory of central Australia.
The victim disappeared from her home while sleeping on April 25 and was found dead on April 30 after a large-scale search. Following the incident, residents apprehended Lewis, the suspect, and beat him collectively; he was arrested by the police while unconscious and transported to the hospital.
Public outrage over the incident escalated into protests. Approximately 400 residents gathered around the hospital where Lewis was admitted, confronting the police, and the demonstrations grew increasingly intense. Some residents attacked police vehicles and set fires, engaging in violent acts, while police responded with tear gas to control the situation. Looting also occurred at nearby gas stations and stores, with property damage reported to have exceeded 180,000 Australian dollars (about 190 million won).
Some have called for "payback" against the suspect, referring to a traditional form of punishment in Indigenous communities that often involves physical retribution. Police have arrested five people in connection with these events so far and have transferred Lewis to the nearby city of Darwin to prevent further violence.
Police emphasized the seriousness of the case while appealing for public restraint. Martin Dole, Northern Territory Police Commissioner, said, "This is an extremely painful case," and urged the community to respect judicial procedures.
The bereaved family expressed their deep sorrow. The victim’s mother said, "It will be extremely difficult to go on with life," and added, "I hope to be reunited someday." The grandfather also stated, "The anger and sadness are immense, but now we must let justice take its course," calling for restraint.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently stated on X (formerly Twitter), "No words can express the immense grief experienced by the victim’s family," adding, "All Australians are holding them deeply in their thoughts during this terrible time of loss."
