"Gifting Trend: Most Parents Plan to Give Presents Until Upper Elementary Grades"

Yoon's Teacher announced on April 30 that the cost of Children's Day gifts has nearly doubled compared to 10 years ago.


According to the survey results, the vast majority of parents (96%) said they plan to give gifts for Children's Day this year. The expected average expenditure for purchasing Children's Day gifts was found to be 95,000 won. Compared to the 2016 survey result (an average of 49,000 won), this represents an increase of approximately two times over 10 years.

The number one Children's Day gift that parents want to give their children (multiple answers allowed) was 'clothing and accessories, such as clothes and shoes' (72.7%). The second most popular choice was 'toys, dolls, and other playthings' (44.4%), followed by 'sports and leisure equipment such as bicycles' (34.2%) in third place. 'Financial assets, such as cash or stocks' (30.8%) ranked fourth, and 'gaming devices' (30.0%) came in fifth.


When asked what factors they primarily consider when choosing Children's Day gifts (multiple answers allowed), the largest number of parents cited 'whether it is something the child wants' (69.2%). The next most common consideration was 'whether it is something the child truly needs' (60.6%), followed by 'whether the price is appropriate for the child's age and the family's circumstances' (42.7%).


When all respondents were asked how long they plan to give their children gifts for Children's Day, about 6 out of 10 parents (59.8%) answered 'until upper elementary school grades.' The next largest group said 'until before graduating from middle school' (21.4%), while 9.8% answered 'until the lower elementary school grades.'


Regarding plans for Children's Day, the largest proportion of parents said they would 'visit amusement parks or theme parks' (31.3%). This was followed by 'domestic or overseas travel and camping' (21.5%). The percentage of parents who said they had 'no plans yet' was 21.2%. Fourth place was 'cultural activities such as watching movies or plays' (18.0%), and fifth was 'resting at home' (3.2%).


It was also found that 67.2% of all respondents plan to receive support for their child's Children's Day gift or purchase expenses from grandparents or other relatives, in addition to the parents themselves.


The survey was conducted from April 16 to 21, targeting 622 parents with children in elementary school or younger.
