As relations between the United States and the United Kingdom cooled over cooperation on the Iran airstrike issue, U.S. President Donald Trump met with King Charles III and emphasized the two countries' "special relationship." King Charles III added to the significance of U.S.-UK friendship by presenting a replica of the blueprint for the "Resolute Desk," the iconic symbol of the Oval Office.

On April 30, Yonhap News TV reported that President Trump had held a state welcoming ceremony for King Charles III at the White House the previous day.

President Trump, who had recently experienced tensions with the UK government during military responses related to Iran, focused on the friendship and historic ties between the two countries in his welcome speech. President Trump praised King Charles III's intelligence, passion, and dedication as blessings not only to the United Kingdom but also to the cherished bond between the United States and the United Kingdom. He added, "I am confident that this relationship will continue for a long time to come."

Previously, the UK government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, reportedly rejected successive requests from the United States to provide a British military base for the Iran attack and to dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz. During this period, President Trump expressed dissatisfaction toward the UK, creating tensions in bilateral relations. However, in his White House address on this day, President Trump placed greater emphasis on "shared history" and "alliance" than on conflict. He noted that this year marks the 250th anniversary of America's independence from the United Kingdom and stressed that the roots of America's forefathers lie in Britain.

President Trump stated, "Since we won our independence, there has never been a closer friend to Americans than the British. We share the same roots, speak the same language, and aspire to the same values."

King Charles III Presents Blueprint of the "Resolute Desk"

Symbolic gifts were exchanged between the two leaders. King Charles III presented President Trump with a framed replica of the 1879 design blueprint for the "Resolute Desk," the iconic symbol of the Oval Office. The Resolute Desk was a gift from Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom to U.S. President Rutherford Hayes in 1880.

The desk was made from timber salvaged from the British warship HMS Resolute and has since been regarded as a symbol of U.S.-UK friendship. In return, President Trump presented King Charles III with a framed copy of a letter that former U.S. President John Adams sent to then-Secretary of State John Jay in 1785. In this letter, President Adams, who was then the U.S. ambassador to the UK, mentioned his meeting with King George III of the United Kingdom and stated that the two countries had agreed to maintain a friendly relationship.

Queen Camilla gave a brooch crafted by the official jeweler of the British royal family, while First Lady Melania Trump presented a set of six silver teaspoons from the jewelry brand Tiffany and a jar of honey produced at the White House beehive. The White House later posted photos of the state welcoming ceremony on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, attracting attention with a caption under a photo of President Trump and King Charles III that read, "Two Kings."

Trump's "C&O Desk" Also Draws Interest

This meeting has also brought renewed attention to the desks that U.S. presidents can use in the White House. President Trump previously stated that the president can choose from among seven desks in the White House. Among these, the "C&O desk," which President Trump reportedly brought in alongside the "Resolute Desk," was made in 1920 for the owner of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway. The desk was donated to the White House in 1987 and is known to have been used in the Oval Office by former President George H. W. Bush. Former Presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan used this desk in the study of the West Wing of the White House.

Among desks used by U.S. presidents, the most famous is undoubtedly the Resolute Desk. Many presidents, including John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, have used it, and it is frequently referenced in historic moments. In addition to the Resolute Desk, the "Wilon Desk," "Hoover Desk," "Theodore Roosevelt Desk," "Johnson Desk," and "Partners Desk" are also considered presidential desks in the White House.

The Theodore Roosevelt Desk was made in 1903 for President Theodore Roosevelt. Several presidents, from William Howard Taft to Dwight D. Eisenhower, used it, and it was damaged in the 1929 West Wing fire of the White House. The Johnson Desk was President Lyndon B. Johnson's personal desk, which he had used since his days as a senator. It is recorded as the only presidential desk to have been used by a single president and is now on display at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas.

The Partners Desk is designed for two people to face each other while working. The gift from King Charles III this time is interpreted as highlighting the historical significance of U.S.-UK relations through the medium of the Resolute Desk, the symbol of the Oval Office. Despite tensions between the two governments over the Iran issue, President Trump focused on emphasizing the traditional alliance with the British royal family during this meeting.
