SG, a company specializing in asphalt concrete, announced on April 30 that its Technology Research Center received the Encouragement Award at the 7th Construction and Transportation New Technology Creation Contest.
At this competition, SG's Technology Research Center submitted a case study on the application of its eco-friendly road paving technology, "Eco Steel Ascon," which was used at the BMW Driving Center, earning them the award. The company was positively evaluated for effectively demonstrating both the technological completeness and environmental benefits of the solution, based on real-world implementation.
Eco Steel Ascon is an environmentally friendly asphalt mixture made using slag, a byproduct generated during the steelmaking process. By reducing the use of natural aggregates, it contributes to resource conservation and environmental protection. It also offers higher strength and durability compared to conventional asphalt, helping to lower maintenance costs. In particular, it is notable for maintaining stable performance even in road environments with heavy truck traffic.
Additionally, the technology enhances drainage and skid resistance, thereby improving driving safety, and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by utilizing recycled resources. For these reasons, it is also recognized as a meaningful technology in terms of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors.
An SG representative stated, "This award is the result of external recognition for the technological prowess and eco-friendly value of Eco Steel Ascon," adding, "We will continue to expand the development and application of sustainable construction technologies to strengthen our competitiveness in the field of eco-friendly infrastructure."
