The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on April 29 that it visited the SK Telecom Incheon Data Center and the LG AI Research Institute to inspect the current status of domestic artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors being utilized and to gather feedback from companies.

This on-site visit was conducted to directly observe commercial services using domestically produced AI semiconductors, as mass production has begun in earnest, and to collect feedback from field practitioners on challenges they face. The AI semiconductor technologies used at these sites are the results of government-supported research and development (R&D) projects that have been commercialized.

At the SK Telecom Incheon Data Center, commercial services such as SK Telecom’s A. (A dot) phone call summary and Excalibur (a pet video diagnostic assistance service) are being provided using the AI semiconductors 'Atom' and 'Atom Max,' which were developed by Rebellions. The A. phone call summary service processes up to 50 million application programming interface (API) calls per day.

LG AI Research Institute has recently combined AI semiconductors such as 'Renegade' from FuriosaAI, a domestic AI semiconductor company, with K-Exaone and Exaone 4.0-models that were introduced as 'noteworthy AI models' at Stanford University's Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) Institute. Renegade is the first domestic AI semiconductor product to be mass-produced using high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

Lee Dokyu, policy chief at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "Now that our AI semiconductors are being mass produced, the government will fully support their rapid introduction and expansion in the market, as well as their ability to secure global competitiveness."
