The Mokpo City Choir and the military band of the Navy's 3rd Fleet Command performed a choral rendition of “Song of Admiral Yi,” bringing the solemn atmosphere to a close. In addition, a memorial wreath was placed in front of the Yi Sun-sin statue on Yudalsan Mountain so that all citizens could pay tribute to Admiral Yi’s noble spirit of national defense.
It is known that Admiral Yi Sun-sin stayed on Gohado Island for 106 days after the victory at the Battle of Myeongnyang, during which he regrouped his forces and worked on rebuilding the Joseon Navy. To commemorate this, Mokpo City holds a birthday ceremony at Mochunggak Pavilion on Gohado Island every year on April 28.
Acting Mayor Cho Seokhoon stated, “Commemorating the 481st anniversary of Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s birth has become a meaningful occasion to reflect on his great spirit in overcoming national crises and protecting the nation. We will continue to carry on and honor Admiral Yi’s patriotic spirit together with our citizens.”
