The KOSPI, which started slightly lower, reversed its trend and set a new record high closing price for the third consecutive day.
On April 29, the KOSPI closed at 6,690.90, up 0.75% from the previous day. Since April 24, the index has recorded a new all-time high closing price for three days in a row. After opening slightly lower at 6,619.00, the KOSPI quickly turned upward, reaching as high as 6,702.38 at around 1:33 p.m.
This rise appears to have been driven by institutional buying. While foreign investors and individuals were net sellers of 199.9 billion won and 83.5 billion won, respectively, institutions were net buyers of 338.5 billion won.
Unlike the early hours of trading, nearly all sectors ended the session higher. The largest gains were seen in chemicals (3.80%), transportation equipment & parts (1.02%), transportation & storage (0.93%), food, beverage & tobacco (0.93%), nonmetallic minerals (0.93%), manufacturing (0.92%), electrical & electronics (0.93%), and entertainment & culture (0.83%). In contrast, securities (-1.84%), pharmaceuticals (-1.58%), and telecommunications (-1.25%) declined.
Most of the top 10 KOSPI stocks by market capitalization also finished higher. The largest gains were posted by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (3.4%), SK Square (2.0%), Samsung Electronics (1.8%), Hanwha Aerospace (1.7%), and Doosan Enerbility (1.4%). On the other hand, Samsung Biologics (-1.9%), Samsung Electro-Mechanics (-1.4%), and SK hynix (-0.4%) declined.
The KOSDAQ displayed a similar trend. After starting slightly lower at 1,213.28, it successfully reversed into positive territory, ending the session up 0.39% at 1,220.26 compared to the previous day. This figure is only about six points below the previous all-time closing high of 1,226.18.
Individual investors, who were net buyers of 150.6 billion won, supported the index. Foreign investors and institutions were net sellers of 26.9 billion won and 83.8 billion won, respectively.
Most sectors also advanced. Notably, construction (3.35%), transportation & storage (1.57%), metals (1.55%), distribution (1.54%), electrical & electronics (1.22%), medical & precision instruments (1.06%), and other manufacturing (1.00%) each rose by more than 1%. Financials (-1.80%) and telecommunications (-1.55%) fell.
Among the top 10 KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization, Samchundang Pharm posted the biggest gain at 2.2%, followed by ABL Bio (1.5%), Alteogen (0.8%), and Leeno Industrial (0.7%). In contrast, Recochem Bio (-4.4%) and Ecopro (-1.3%) declined.
