On April 29, the Democratic Party of Korea nullified its nomination for the head of Yanggu County, Gangwon Province. Regarding the possibility of unifying candidates among pro-government parties, including for the Pyeongtaek-eul district, the Democratic Party dismissed the idea, stating, "This is not the time to discuss it."
Junhyun Kang, Senior Spokesperson of the Democratic Party of Korea, met with reporters after the Supreme Council meeting on the same day and announced, "We have decided to nullify the nomination of the candidate for the head of Yanggu County, Gangwon Province, who was selected as a candidate for the 9th Nationwide Local Elections. To re-nominate a candidate, we will designate the region as a strategic constituency."
Kang added, "For other positions that have been widely mentioned in the media, such as the mayor of Suncheon, the head of Jongno District, and the head of Gangbuk District, we will conduct further investigations for about one more day, and will aim to make a decision at the Supreme Council meeting by the 30th at the latest."
Regarding the possibility of unifying pro-government candidates in the Pyeongtaek-eul constituency in Gyeonggi Province, Kang drew a clear line. He stated, "It seems the issue of unification is being discussed a lot in Pyeongtaek-eul, but at present, this is not the time to talk about unification." He continued, "We will focus on winning under the Democratic Party’s name and will do our best to ensure the victory of the Democratic Party’s candidate."
In the Pyeongtaek-eul constituency, in addition to former Assemblyman Yongnam Kim, who was strategically nominated by the Democratic Party, other pro-government candidates such as Joukook, leader of the Korea Innovation Party, and Jaeyeon Kim, Standing Representative of the Progressive Party, are also running.
Meanwhile, Kang also announced, "All National Assembly members running in the local elections will resign en masse."
