Full-Scale Promotion of Nuclear Stone Sculpture Park and Handbag Museum in Songdo, Incheon

MOU Signed with Sculptor Kim Chang-gon, Simonne, and Bluecore PFV

The project to build a Nuclear Stone Sculpture Park and a Handbag Museum in Songdo International City, Incheon, is set to move forward in earnest.

On April 29, Incheon Metropolitan Government announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with sculptor Professor Kim Chang-gon, Simonne Chairperson Park Eun-kwan, and Bluecore PFV CEO Lee Dong-man to create this cultural landmark on the site of the Songdo 6·8-district cultural park.

This memorandum of understanding specifically outlines the roles of each party, operational plans, the formation of a consultative body, and future procedures, following Bluecore PFV's selection as the developer. This follows an agreement reached two years ago to establish the Nuclear Stone Sculpture Park and Handbag Museum in Songdo.

Sculptor Kim Chang-gon and Chairperson Park Eun-kwan plan to donate more than 50 large-scale sculptures, each standing between 4 and 18 meters tall and made of nuclear stone, to the sculpture park free of charge. Nuclear stone is a type of granite formed in nature over a long period, featuring unique shapes and textures. It is known that the creation of a group of large-scale sculptures using this material is rare both in Korea and internationally.

Additionally, a Nuclear Stone Exhibition Hall will be established to explain the significance of the creation process, feature miniatures, and provide information about the nuclear stone works displayed in the outdoor sculpture park.

The Handbag Museum will be built as an exhibition space that introduces the history of handbags, design evolution, and production processes from the 16th century to the present. Handbags serve as a representative cultural item reflecting the lifestyles, fashion, and industrial development of different eras, acting as a medium to convey various stories through the changes in design, materials, and manufacturing techniques.

The Handbag Museum will be based on the extensive archives and collections accumulated by Simonne, which holds the highest global market share in luxury handbag manufacturing. After constructing the Handbag Museum and the Nuclear Stone Exhibition Hall, Simonne plans to donate them to Incheon Metropolitan Government.

Bluecore PFV, which will be responsible for the construction of the cultural park, announced its vision to maximize the sculptor's creative intent and public usability in its design, as well as to specialize the lighting and landscaping, aiming to make the cultural park a unique landmark.

Incheon Mayor Yoo Jung-bok said, "I am very pleased that we are able to bring in high-quality artworks that will elevate Songdo’s cultural stature and expand cultural spaces for citizens," adding, "We will support this project to become a leading cultural and artistic hub representing not only Songdo, but all of Korea."
